June 10, 2015 11:00

RTDNA has announced the winners of the 2015 Student Edward R. Murrow Awards. This is the first time the Association has created three categories specifically for students.

"We're delighted to recognize great journalism being done by students across the country with the Student Edward R. Murrow Awards," said RTDNA Chair Amy Tardif. "This is the first time we have offered award categories specifically designed for students to present their best work, and the entries were outstanding."

The winners are:

Overall Excellence - Audio: Lime Shortage "Squeeze"
Helena Battipaglia, Syracuse University  @HC_Batt
The judges said the natural sound took listeners into the grocery store and restaurant she visited to localize a problem that was national in scale, and said the short tracks helped glue the piece together in an informative, yet compelling way. Battipaglia works as a reporter and producer for NPR affiliate WAER-FM and has interned at News 12 Long Island, CBS News in New York and CNN in Hong Kong.

Overall Excellence - Video: Gun Wars
Erin Patrick O'Connor, Arizona State University  @MrErinO
Camden, New Jersey's homicide rate was 17 times higher than the national average in 2012. The winning story explores the city and talks to people who have organized to curb the impact of gun violence. O'Connor directed a documentary shown on every television news station in the state of Arizona, and was a 2014 fellow in the university's Carnegie-Knight investigative reporting initiative.

Overall Excellence - Digital: Tired of Being Bumped, Caltrain Bike Commuters Push for More Space
Carolina Wilson, Stanford University  @carowilson1228
With bike commuter traffic growing in the Bay Area, bicyclists are being bumped off trains due to a lack of bike capacity, creating a growing issue. Wilson graduated this month from Stanford's graduate program in journalism, and has interned for Bloomberg's Latin American Emerging Markets team.

The winners will be recognized at the RTDNA Edward R. Murrow Awards Gala at Gotham Hall in New York City on October 12. The winners of this year's national Edward R. Murrow Awards for professionals will be announced later this month. Click here to purchase tickets to this signature event.
