RTDNA urges Cleveland to allow gas masks for journalists

RTDNA, the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press and seveal other news organizations and media companies have sent a letter to the mayor and police chief of Cleveland, Ohio, urging them to allow journalists to possess, and if necessary, wear gas masks at the Republican National Convention next week.

The city-issued event permit for the convention and the expected protests contains regulations that forbid the use of gas masks. The groups say if tear gas is used, it would be a newsworthy event, and journalists should have the ability to protect themselves as they attempt to report on the event.

In the letter, the groups say rather than re-writing the regulations at the last minute, police should be instructed not to enforce the regulation for credentialed journalists, pointing out that at the upcoming Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, there are no restrictions on gas masks.
