2008 National RTNDA/UNITY Award Winners

Congratulations to the winners of the 9th Annual RTNDA/UNITY Awards.

The awards were presented as part of the gala opening of the 2008 UNITY Convention, the country's largest gathering of journalists of color.

RTNDA developed the award with UNITY: Journalists of Color as part of a shared commitment to achieving diversity in the newsroom through developing news content and editorial staffs that reflect the changing face of America.


This year, six news organizations are being recognized for their ongoing commitment to covering the cultural diversity of the communities they serve.

TELEVISION

  • CNN, Atlanta, for Special Investigations Unit: Children of the Storm (network)
  • WTLV-TV, Jacksonville, FL, for "Dropping Out" (large market)
  • WHA-TV, Madison, WI, for "Way of the Warrior" (small market)

RADIO

  • PRI's The World, Boston, for PRI's The World: Global Resource Service (network)
  • WNYC-FM, New York, for WNYC's Radio Rookies: NYC Immigrant Teens (large market)
  • South Dakota Public Broadcasting, Vermillion, SD, for SDPB Radio (small market)

The awards were presented in Chicago at the opening ceremony of UNITY's quadrennial convention. The winners will also be recognized during the RTNDA Awards Dinner on October 13, 2008, in New York, where recipients of the national Edward R. Murrow Awards will also be honored.

UNITY: Journalists of Color, Inc. is a strategic alliance advocating fair and accurate news coverage about people of color, and aggressively challenging the industry to staff its organizations at all levels to reflect the nation's diversity.

RTNDA is the world's largest professional organization devoted exclusively to electronic journalism. RTNDA represents local and network journalists in broadcasting, cable and other electronic media in more than 30 countries.
