5 Ways to Cover the Candidates (Without Spending Your War Chest)

Candidates spend millions drawing attention to the issues. You don’t have to spend millions to cover them. Use your online tools to be a resource in your community.

1. Use resources and information already at your fingertips to develop an online franchise devoted to local, state and federal elections, including your archive of stories, videos and photos, as well as datebook information about candidate events in the area. Cross-promote the micro-site within your larger site.

2. Find out what the local and state candidates are doing online and be the resource that links to everything on the web.

3. Create online polls on issues that are important to your community.

4. Take advantage of the tools and resources your station group is creating.

5. Take advantage of open-source widgets and toys created for anyone to place on their sites.
