Edward R. Murrow Awards Ceremony

Dan Rather accepts the Edward R. Murrow award on behalf of CBS on October 4, 2004, in New York. Dan Rather was the anchor and managing editor of CBS Evening News as well as contributing to 60 Minutes.

Thank you very much. First of all, I'd like to recognize and congratulate my longtime colleagues and competitors Tom Brokaw and Peter Jennings. And I'd also like to extend my very best wishes to the family of David Bloom--an excellent reporter who will long be remembered by people who care about the news.

I want to thank you for this, for all of us at CBS News--and CBS Radio News--and from the depths of this reporter's heart. And I want to especially thank the many people here who have written or called to express their support during what has been a tough time for CBS News.

It's almost boilerplate, in accepting an award of this kind, to say that you are "humbled;" please know, tonight, that I indeed am humbled by this, and by what it represents to CBS News and to me, personally. Please know, too, that we are resolved to emerge from this trial as an even stronger news organization, so that we may continue to be worthy of your trust and confidence. We will keep striving for the "overall excellence" you have seen in us tonight. This is indeed an honor, and we appreciate it very much.
