Day #1 from the RNC: A Muted Start
After all of the planning and after all of the hype, the
Republican National Convention is in town and we are ready. Obviously,
the feel of the convention is very different than what we had been
planning for because of Hurricane Gustav but our focus on covering it
certainly hasn't changed.
There are many things missing on this first day. Diane Sawyer and
Charlie Gibson aren't walking these halls because the networks have
turned their attention to the Gulf coast. I interviewed ABC News
political director David Chalian during our midday show and he seemed
to think that the focus would come back to St. Paul since the hurricane
isn't causing any significant damage..at least not as of this morning.
As someone who lives in St. Paul, I hope the Twin Cities see the
economic impact everyone was predicting. You hope that a hurricane
doesn't hurt a year of planning here in Minnesota. The word from
Minnesota delegates is that with less time at the Xcel Energy Center,
delegates are having more time to spend money locally.
KSTP-TV has a great operation here at the X. I need to thank our
fantastic engineers for making my job as an anchor so easy. I am
anchoring our morning and midday shows out here everyday. We hope the
action picks up as the convention gets going and we also hope the
people on the Gulf coast avoid any serious damage.
