Follow the dominoes
Jun 22 2009
The recession has put lots of people out of work and the layoffs and firings have a ripple effect. For every job lost, there's likely to be another. Tell the story by following the dominoes.
The suggestion comes from TV news manager Griff Potter by way of the Los Angeles Times and reporter Alana Semuels' story, One Layoff Leads to Another.
As the recession deepens across the country,
touching millions of individuals, it links people through countless
cutbacks and layoffs. One job loss leads to another, much the way a
wobbly domino can topple the whole row.
Minor financial decisions -- a penny pinched here, a dollar saved there -- build, rippling through a chain of strangers.
The story followed the trail from a writer let go from a video game company, who had to lay off his nanny, stop visiting his barber, and can no longer afford to eat out.
CBS News has been doing stories based on a similar premise. As the lead-in to this story by Kelly Cobiella put it, "The failing economy shows how dependent we are on one another."
