Things are getting better here in central Iowa and the capital city of Des Moines. Crunch time was last week and particularly this past Saturday morning when a levee on the Des Moines River burst at 3:30 am. We were in continuous coverage for most of Friday as the rivers crested right near the top of the levee system, and were breathing a sigh of relief when disaster did not ensue. Then came the levee break at 3:30 am, and everyone hustled back into work for another 7 hours of continuous coverage. Des Moines did not get hit nearly as hard as our neighbors in eastern Iowa, but we have had plenty of flooding coverage here. The station has been great about bringing in meals to keep our troops going. I've been amazed at how staff members just show up on their off-hours - volunteering to get to work and cover this huge story. We're grateful for a few dry days this week as the city cleans up.
