Carol Knopes to Receive Friends of Scholastic Journalism Award

WASHINGTON – Carol Knopes, director of education projects for the Radio Television Digital News Foundation, will be honored with the Friends of Scholastic Journalism Award by the Journalism Education Association. The award honors journalists, professional media outlets and individuals or groups making a significant contribution to scholastic journalism. The award will be presented to Knopes and five others at a lunch on Saturday, November 14 during the JEA convention in Washington.

“Carol Knopes is well deserving of this important scholastic journalism award,” said Kathleen Graham, RTDNF executive director. “Carol is dedicated to educating young people about how to practice ethical journalism as well as teaching multimedia to journalism educators.”  

Knopes was named director of education projects for the Radio Television Digital News Foundation in 2004. As director of the High School Project for RTDNF, she has worked with more than 400 teachers across the country in a national program supporting high school journalism in radio, television and online multimedia. Knopes has been a newspaper reporter and editor since 1968. She worked at the Philadelphia Inquirer, the Bergen Record and the Detroit Free Press; she was also on one of the first editorial teams at USA TODAY. She has led writing/editing seminars at the Poynter Institute in St. Petersburg, Florida.

The High School Electronic Journalism Project’s mission is to educate young people about First Amendment principles and values and supporting students' efforts to practice good journalism.
