Bill vs. Bud and the rest of them
As a former newspaper journalist who now works at a TV station, I say kudos to Bill for standing up in the face of ALL THAT resistance. And shame on the rest of those reporters.

p.s.
I also LOVE the veiled threat from Bud. "You're in a university building, you realize that." Really? And what does THAT mean?

right on Mr. Chairman--here's more.
We interviewed Shory to get some more details. http://www.poynter.org/column.asp?id=2&aid=176009 He reminds me a lot of Stacey Woelfel fighting the Missouri legislature over anchors wearing American flag lapel pins. There are not enough of your sort.

Sports "journalism"
This is a prime example about how sports related, access needed, stories clash directly with journalism at its heart. You can't piss off the sports team/organization/athletic director/university because we need them (for some reason) to give us access to games and the same locker room soundbites we hear everyday. "I just want to thank my mom and dad and thank God for helping me hit that ball/make that basket/catch that pass. I couldn't have done it without my team." And we trade this for what? Agreeing to their ground rules? Voluntarily limiting our rights as journalist to help them achieve their own public relations strategy?

What this teaches our kids
We posted the video and other links about this story on the High School Broadcast Journalism website (hsbj.org). Here's what one teacher wrote on our forum: "Thanks so much for posting this video. I found the 'rule setting' not only disturbing but also quite sad...the sadness being inspired by the numerous reporters who, like sheep to the slaughter, were more than willing to take the scraps being tossed to them. There seemed to be more aspiring press agents/pr people in the room than reporters. I will be using this in the classroom.

WBIR news director
I found this clip fascinating - it really exposes some of the horse-trading that goes on in these "news conferences." And good for Bill for standing up for his "rights," and not letting one sector of the media receive greater access than WBIR. But a few things perplex me about all of this: - Why was UT's sports information director being so protective of the coach that just left his program twisting in the wind? Why does UT feel obligated to continue managing the media for Kiffin? As a current public affairs officer at a major university, I can say that I would throw this man to the wolves and let him have his own news conference in his garage. - Why did Kiffin feel obligated to participate in a half-baked news conference in the first place? He's leaving under a huge cloud. He's presumably filed his letter of resignation (probably a public document). Get out of town and don't let the door hit you in the butt. - Even if he's a state employee and everybody is gathered in a state-owned building, he certainly isn't obligated to provide soundbites. As a former government employee, I bent over backward to provide the media with any public document they requested, in a timely manner. And I would usually do the little dog-and-pony interview. But no FOI law requires a government employee to go on television to get beaten up (that's why we have politicians). I guess what I'm saying is -- this turned out ok for Channel 10 and the rest, in spite of their complaining. What if Kiffin had heard this commotion from behind the curtain, and walked away from the whole thing? (or worse, called Jim Wogan at Channel 6 for an exclusive sit-down interview?)
