Ed Bliss--broadcasting legend and 1993 RTNDA Paul White Award winner--died Nov. 25 at a Virginia hospital. Bliss worked at CBS under both Murrow and Cronkite, and was the author of "Writing News for Broadcast," "Now the News," and "Beyond the Stone Arches," a book about his father. He also edited a book called "In Search of Light: The Broadcasts of Edward R. Murrow".
Hired by CBS News in 1943, Ed Bliss spent a quarter century at the network that was then the dominant force in broadcast journalism. Along with Alexander Kendrick, George Polk, David Schoenbrun and others, Bliss was part of the second generation of "Murrow Boys." A producer, editor and writer for Murrow, Bliss was also the first news editor for the CBS Evening News With Walter Cronkite.
In a Nov. 15, 1993, article in the American University Eagle newspaper regarding his RTNDA Paul White Award, Bliss had these thoughts to share.
I've had a really wonderful life--my boyhood in China, I've travelled all over the world, and I married a lovely woman. I've had lovely daughters and I've had an exciting career. I've done it all. So when you see my obituary, if there is one, you'll say, 'Well, he had a good life.' And I did. I had a good life, very good.
Below are some collected speeches and interviews with or about Bliss.
