We enable user-generated content for classifieds, some photo and video uploads on our non-news sites (dealing with community "trading post" items, pet-centric sites, etc.) but we do allow a fairly free flow of commenting on our news content. It can be a big headache at times and the general tenor can turn ugly very quickly, but we provide readers the ability to flag more offensive comments and will remove if determined to go beyond our normal conduct guidelines. It has proven, however, to be a very useful tool in expanding the reach of our story and providing more depth. We shouldn't presume to know more than the community we report on, and many times our readers and listeners are a better pair of eyes and ears.
