Sen. Rockefeller Suggests Eliminating FOX, MSNBC
Print Story

Nov 18 2010

By Ryan G. Murphy, RTDNA Digital Media Editor

I was very disappointed to wake up this morning and see a video of Sen. Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) blasting both FOX and MSNBC during a Cable & Broadcast subcommittee hearing on Wednesday with what appeared to be a request for government intervention if the network's content is not cleaned up.

Here's part of Rockefeller's statement: "There's a little bug inside of me which wants to get the FCC to say to FOX and to MSNBC: 'Out. Off. End. Goodbye.' It would be a big favor to political discourse; our ability to do our work here in Congress, and to the American people, to be able to talk with each other and have some faith in their government and more importantly, in their future."

Rockefeller's statement is concerning for a number of reasons but the most striking to me is the portion that reads: "It would be a big favor to political discourse...and to the American people."

As I'm reading this, Rockefeller is saying that the United States electorate will be better informed if we ELIMINATE two major media voices - that getting rid of them would essentially be addition by subtraction.

Put your own politics on FOX and MSNBC aside for a second and let's just agree that they can both sometimes present potentially polarizing views.

What Rockefeller is suggesting with his statement is that the views presented on FOX and MSNBC have no place in the news consumers' world and, because they are not "quality news," the government should intervene. Simply put, that's absolute censorship and undermines having a diverse flow of information in the market. It also destroys market-based competition among the networks. This is America, right?

Rockefeller failed to point out that the FCC does not have the authority to regulate either FOX or MSNBC. The channels are on cable - not broadcast airwaves. It's frustrating to see that he would even THINK to have the government step in because of content.

As the New York Times reported, the comments about FOX News and MSNBC were not in Mr. Rockefeller’s prepared remarks. In those prepared remarks, he also said:

"When it comes to developing content, our entertainment machine is too often in a race to the bottom. Even worse, our news media has all but surrendered to the forces of entertainment. Instead of a watchdog that is a check on the excesses of government and business, we have the endless barking of a 24-hour news cycle. We have journalism that is always ravenous for the next rumor, but insufficiently hungry for the facts that can nourish our democracy. As citizens, we are paying a price."

Among the digs in the above statement, Rockefeller is making a valid, and often discussed point among my colleagues - a 24-hour news cycle brings with it a vast set of challenges that require careful planning and extreme adaptability. It appears that during yesterday's hearing Rockefeller would have done much better if just stuck to his script.

Suggesting censorship is not only the easy way out but it also undermines the point you were trying to make, senator. Healthy political discourse requires diversity of opinion, not no opinion at all. If there's something on television you don't like, please just change the channel.

A democrat politician's statement

On the surface he's just whining about being held to task for doing his job. No one likes to be nagged (which i think is a big part of FOX's unpopularity among politicians - they are a gadfly). But deeper down his statement is disturbing because it shows how little respect he has for the fundamental principles of our country and our constitution. Be THANKFUL you are being watched - you are a public servant and should be an open book. Serve with humility and serve your fellow man and country.

He is from the same state that continued to share Robert Byrd with America. His own activities merit scrutiny.

Has Jay Rockefeller ever heard the word "censorship"? It's obvious he has never heard of the First Amendment. This is Fascism at its finest. We are sliding down that icy slope very fast now. We had better find a way to stop before we are completely drowned in a sea of totalitarianism. These people are scarey.

Re: Sen. Rockefeller Suggests Eliminating FOX, MSNBC

If you pay your cable bill, what you see is what you get and have paid-for. In regards to the airwaves, they belong to The People, not the Government. Jay Rockefeller is to do The People's business, not his own. He needs a refresher course in Constitutional law and the FCC mandate as it regards The People owning the airwaves, not the government.

This is a classic case of the Peter Principle. Just because his (great?) grandfather developed the mass marketing of oil and became the richest man on earth, suddenly the entire family was considered beyond brilliant. Another Rockefeller who was governor of New York then later Vice President was a pathetic failure in both. This guy is also a pathetic loser. When is his term over?

For those too blind to figure it out, this would be a first step alright -- a first step toward totalitarian rule where there is no such thing as freedom of speech. As the author said, put your political differences aside and ask yourself if you really wish to live in a country where it's illegal to speak out on what you believe in, i.e., no personal opinions allowed. Censorship and the Liberal Left

Sen. Rockefeller's inane screed illustrates the absolute hypocrisy and danger to our liberty that progressives constantly and consistently champion. Censorship is passed as "quality control", thought and speech are regulated against "hate speech", and only liberal views are considered valid. This is the ugly reality that passes for the laughable term of "liberalism".

See the danger and act accordingly. Vote out anyone who even hints at controlling any part of your life, your liberty or your opinion.

If I was a jack-booted-thug-wannabee bent on subjugating a population I would: 1) Disarm them. 2) Control their access to information. 3) Restrict their ability to communicate with each other. 4) Restrict their ability to freely travel and ship goods. DEEMER ROCKEFELLER REMARKS

Here is another case involving elitism, extended incumbency, learning disability all this describes so many Deemers and RINO's who have insulated themselves from the law, America and the voting public where the taxpayers, who pay their self-indulgent life styles, come from.

Remember the removed Jim Wright who's favorite sayin was a double entendre, "We just want to hep you." now substitute the word hep(help) for the word "screw" and you have again hit upon the ulterior motive of the power drunk political warriors club of which the renowned Deemer Rockefeller is a leading member and if he has his way, there will be no milk with your cookie because he told you so and "He" is all knowing government. Does that not sound exactly why this country was founded, so that all are equal under the law and unalienable rights bestowed uopon you by God could take place and the government was run by "We the people"? Well if you don't your going to lose that freedom you love to talk about, it has to be maintained and that means that when a Rockefeller type exposes himself, it's time for a replacement who still loves the Constitution and all it represents.

By M. Hardy on Nov 18 2010
Ridiculous

Why is it that I rarely hear Republicans making these kinds of statements, but Democrat politicians--from Pelosi to Obama to now Rockefeller--seem to make them regularly? Do Democrats understand we are a constitutional republic, and that politicians do not have the power to do anything but what our Constitution tells them they can do? Obama crosses this same line when, as president, he singles out one news network and tells the country not to watch it.

By s. pants on Nov 18 2010
Rockefeller\'s suggestion

I don\'t care if the comments are from Hannity, Olberman,O\'Reily or Maddow ... EVERY opinion or point of view MUST be available for everyone.

Our republic requires a free press as part of the 1st amendment. To suggest that news be removed from public availability because it makes it difficult for congressional actions to be conducted without making the general public unhappy with government is a direct abandonment with the oath of office to protect and defend the constitution.

Or, Mr Rockefeller, is the perpetuation of graft, corruption, waste, inefficiency and secrecy so paramount that you would deny the people the guarantees of the 1st amendment? When that day comes, I sincerely hope that the people will advance on legislators like you and throw you out of office. After all, your tenure is only guaranteed by the constitution ... a constitution that you apparently only feel need to be followed as long as it feeds your interests.

If the prople wantto feed THEIR interests, would they not also have the power to deny constitutional provisions to throw you and others into the Patomac?

Tyranny LOVES silence

Why are we so surprised that Mr. Rockefeller proposes blatant censorship? Tyranny can never thrive where people can air their views and express their opinions. Im no fan of MSNBC: neither Olbermann, Maddow nor the "tingly leg" fellow would have much good to say about me or my opinions or how I vote. That much being said, I would be the first to take to the streets and protest if any self-important "we know whats best for you commoners" petty little dictator like Mr. Rockefeller actually had them banned.

Mr. Rockefeller gives the game away when he claims that Congress would be able to better get its work done if Fox and Msnbc were banned. What kind of "work" would it be if it cannot stand the light of day? Abolishing yet more of our freedoms? Socking us with some more insane nanny state rules? Sticking their claws even deeper into our wallets? Ordering the TSA to give us body cavity searches as well as the traditional public grope?

As much as I dislike and disagree with MSNBC and its commie ilk, (I'm not a 100%) fan of Fox either) it gives me the willies when elitetists such as Rockefeller unmask and call for measures that are clearly unconstitutional. These moves, of course are always for the public good. I am shocked that he did noy include that this should be done "for the children".

Problem Resolved in 2012

The problem is that you do not believe in liberal government and its good intentions to help you overcome your doubts. You must continually strive to improve your countenance by never speaking out or casting any dispersion on liberal policies and their chosen leaders. Be aware of what has happened to others in the past for anti-social behavior and learn from their mistakes. That is essentially what the Senator said. Most voters now realize that not enough democrats were removed from power during the past election. Get rid of this senator and the problem fixes itself.

Jay Rockefeller's statement regarding Fox and MSNBC truly shows the attitudes of the malignant left in our government. Not only is this Rockefeller a disgrace to his family, as he is a Dimwitcrat, but he actually said what we on the conservative side of the aisle have always know...the Dems want FOX shut down because it not only exposes the high level of incompetence in our government, it also exposes the high level of corruption, and the Marxist/Socialists/Communists that are being paid by our tax money to destroy what this country stands for.

Fox News and MSNBC should be taken off "airwaves"

This is a prime example of why the Dems lost in November. He is one the political class who thinks we are not smart enough to decide for ourselves what is truth and what is spin.

It is another step in trying to take away our rights. Airport scanners and grope stations will be put at the front of buildings next. Biometric scanners and chip implants will be next in this police state.

Sen. Rockefeller needs to be taken off the air. He is the single biggest leaker of top secret documents in history (maybe tied with Leahy?) and is an out-of-touch plutocrat all the way. When the full extent of the corruption and perfidy are revealed--probably on Fox News--folks like Rockefeller will need to be more worried about hanging upside down from lampposts than taking news stations off the air.

More cunning than your normal Democrat

Most Democrats just rail against Fox News, opening themselves up to the legitimate charge that they're simply expressing their political bias. By including MSNBC in his criticism, the Senator makes it appear that he is being somewhat objective. However, I doubt he is genuinely troubled by MSNBC. It's just the price he's willing to pay to appear objective. And a pretty small price to pay at that.

Throwing MSNBC under the bus is a small price because:

1. Fox News has almost infinitely higher ratings. It's like sacrificing a pawn to get your opponent's queen.

2. Even if the left loses MSNBC, they still have ABC, CBS, NBC, and CNN.

What are you advocating, who is the arbiter, and who determines the matrix and the parameters? Is your solution to simply create another taxpayer-sponsored government bureaucracy that will oversee what news gets sent out about itself? How would you guarantee any protection for the free flow of information under that scenario? Sorry. I STRONGLY disagree with your position.

You Frame The Issue Wrong

You frame the issue as whether Fox's and MSNBC's "polarizing" content has a place in the political discourse. That is-- perhaps intentionally so-- a strawman (mis)characterization of the issue, and plainly was NOT Mr. Rockefeller's point. The issue is whether those domineering voices crowd out the very views that are supposed to make up political discourse. Giving a microphone to the most polarizing views where there is none for the rest both obfuscates other legitimate voices in political discourse and changes the game of political discourse by promoting disingenuous speech in the marketplace of ideas. I'm not saying whether he's right -- there is, after all, a first Amendment problem with the Senaator's idea. But please don't try and act like the legimacy Fox and MSNBC's content is really the issue.

2) I enjoy one to hear the latest on my side of the issues and the other side to hear the opposing view in order to either strengthen my arguments or change my point of view if appropriate. My political knowledge and understanding of others' points of view would be greatly diminished with the loss of either one.

By Buffal0Bill on Nov 18 2010
My Guess

Not to defend his statement, but, he does make a point that is very poorly constructed.

I would suggest that people that watch MSNBC and FoxNews are busy and only have time in the day to watch either one or the other, not both. Both of them play to a particular demographic an have their own bias and filtered views. If you only listen to one side of the story too long, you polarize the electorate to the point of stalemate and everybody hates the government, one side or the other.

Where his logic fails, is to not mention that there is little TV coverage that is in-depth and unbiased to fill the void left by the elimination of the two outlets of acknowledged biased information. He really should be focused on the quality of the remaining news outlets, not the two that do the deepest reporting (editorializing).

FCC Content Regulation

If this country were a small dictatorship, it would make sense to regulate content of broadcasters, but we are not a dictatorship.
Mr. Rockefeller needs to take a basic FCC Title 47 class because he is not aware that the FCC cannot and will not take networks off the air in turbulent political times that are displeasing to him.
If Mr. Rockefeller had shown a better understanding of how our process works, he could have presented an incremental solution but instead he treats these networks like commodities in his own businesses. Broadcasting is not a game of monopoly in terms regulatory responsibility.
Where was Mr. Rockefeller when the corporate entities that purchased these networks were seeking government approval? In good times, Mr. Rockefeller may have cheered on the win-win profit potential but now, in bad times he seeks to control both ways.
No way.

By Eileen on Nov 18 2010
Blame Fox for your miserable failures.

It's a popular trend among the cognoscenti to slam Fox news as if it were propaganda central. Any watcher of the station knows different. It's about the only station that offers a fair hearing to conservative and liberal voices without condescension, denigration, or the inclusion of petty disparaging remarks. What really gets under the skin of Senator Apparatchik is he and the rest of the autocratic used car salesman in congress can't maintain the guise of competence, caring, and concern, when the facts relating to their actions are revealed on national television to be otherwise.

That "bug" is called FASCISM, Mr. Senator

I am not surprised that a liberal/left-wing Democrat said this. The Dem party is all about silencing their critics. He threw MSNBC in there just to appear "balanced" in his intolerance, but the real goal of Herr Rockerfeller is for the government (and their allies in the traditional media) to control all information and to tell people how to think.

The End of America

This, if permitted, is how America ends.

MSNBC and Fox are not equivalents. The former is a propaganda machine; the latter is, measurably, the cable TV News station that has the most integrity.

I'd like Jay (our kids went to school together) to identify which Fox news reporters he believes to typify the point he is trying to make. Of course, he won't and, of course, he cannot. And I would bet that the persons that most people who believe along his lines would identify are not, in fact, news reporters.

I, like most others watching cable, watch Fox because it is entertaining and because I can see left, right, liberal, moderate and conservative commentators and guests.

Rockefeller's tactic is patent. He lumps something horribly useless (MSNBC) together with something that evenly informs a great many Americans (which makes it a danger to the progressives, the persons who believe in a planned, rather than a free society) in order to be able, at least in his mind, to be able to claim that he is an equal opportunity information tyrant. It won't work, Jay. It's been tried before and has always been found wanting.

Remember who you are

A United States Senator should be more circumspect in his public statements than to suggest that a government agency -- which because of his position may consider his very words as pressure to act -- shut down media outlets that he doesn't like. We expect such comments on Daily Kos or Free Republic, but not in the statements of high government officials. It's frightening that he even thinks this way.

Ban news stations that don't agree with you so that Congress can get its work done or so spoiled rich kids can have their way? Which is it? MSNBC and Fox should be called opinion channels, not news channels. Look at the everning lineups: 1 hour of news at 6 (when hardly anyone watches) followed by hours of commentary. Having lived in WV for nearly 14 years, I can attest to the problem when a population has been consumed by the "old Democrats" and have yet to wake up to the fact that the "new Democrats" should spell their name "new Socialists" Rockefeller was an early infiltrator and has done more harm than good IMHO. He is up for re-election in 2012 and should find the climate far different here than in the past. Yes, we just elected another Dem. Senator primarily because of family voting patterns and a short political race brought on by a special election process patched together at the last minute. Did I wake up in Venezuela today?

I married a Venezuelan woman in 1998, the year Hugo Chavez came to power. I've been a very close observer and analyst of the Bolivarian Revolution down there, and Senator Rockefeller's comments about Fox and MSNBC are not "frustrating", as you called it. They are instead offensive, horrifying, anti-American, un-democratic, and unacceptable.

His comment was an almost verbatum repitition of the accusations made by Hugo Chavez and his supporters in the months before they shut down one media outlet after another. They always used the same excuse: X media is "divisive", it is "unhealthy" for "discourse", and "democracy would be strengthened by shutting them down." RCTV, one of the oldest TV stations in the country, was forced off the air. Now they are after Globovision.

For the entire history of Television, the broadcast channels have had a monopoly on news reporting, and have slanted LEFT for decades. Now the country has ONE--just ONE--conservative leaning outlet, and the Democrats find that unacceptable.

Why? Because it is now clear that their monopoly is threatened, and thus their ability to brainwash and mislead the public has been thwarted.

That is what he meant. His comment was a THREAT, in response to the electoral slaughter the Liberals just suffered.

It's harder for him to 'persuade' those officials that he needs to persuade (for personal gain, might I add, they are the Rockefeller's and Jay Rockefeller is afterall, the great-grandson of the oil tycoon John D. Rockefeller) because his political agenda can be analyzed by the masses, us Americans. Who then compare them to what we think is best for us (this is a democracy after all, what the American people want is how it's going to be and we elect officials in accordance with our beliefs).

Down right idiot. We American's are not robots of the media to the extent that most people believe. We know how to analyze what the Media Correspondent is telling us and determine what we see to be worth while listening to.

Like the statement said, if you don't like the channel just turn it. And quit worrying about what others would be seeing.

Sen. Rockefeller Suggests Eliminating FOX, MSNBC

I hope people can see from this Senator's comments that their is a fine line between Socialism and Communism, One just doesn't have the iron fist included. When Democrat Sen. start talking about Government censoring our freedom of speech rights you know that Fox news is hitting home and exposing their plans. I don't care if your dem, repub, or indi this should scare you and cause you to look into what people like Glen Beck is saying.

"How does this guy stay in office"

Rockefeller has enough misguided constituents who continue to vote for him AND his connections to SEIU prevent a valid challenge. SEIU and voter fraud often appear in the same sentence. Not saying that Rockefeller would ever stoop to such tactics of course.

Censorship is simply foolish

Senator Rockefeller has hit on a point that all and I mean ALL American people need to be aware of. Politicans want to control the message, if they can't control the message or they lose the communication battle they look for ways to regain control of the message. Senator Rockefeller is trying to say we need to slience voices so that people can have civil discorse in politics. This translates to, get rid of the voices of people who have strong feelings (Fox News Commentators (right) and MSNBC Commentators (left)) and all that will be left is people who will parrot what we the ruling class want the people to know. Other's would confuse the message we are trying to sell. Remember anytime anyone involved with the government suggests (in my own words) that someone who disagrees with them SHUT UP and go away, people should speak out and speak louder.

Mr Rockefeller, you are one of the reasons I'm ashamed to be a democrat. You voted FOR Obamacare even though the majority of your constituents wanted you to vote NO, now you are FOR censorship by saying that the FCC should get rid of FOX News and MSNBC? Actually, eliminating these two media outlets would go far to lessen the highly manipulative political propaganda that spews forth daily from 'news' television. The networks' poll reports alone are a dangerous form of suggestion. Neither of these organizations demonstrate any true objectivity. They are mere provocateurs and shills. Anyway, if this country had a better education system, its citizens would be less fearful and quite quick to recognize hearsay.

The first step that needs to be taken is to get rid of the good Senator. We West Virginians take the First Amendment very seriously. Mr. Rockefeller, if I don't like what a news channel has to say, I turn it off. That is why I don't watch CNN, MSNBC, and the other obviously left-biased news organizations. I, along with the majority of America, watch Fox News. Every day, without fail. Mr. Rockefeller, I promise you that I will save this story, and when it's time for your re-election bid, it WILL be brought up to the local and national networks.

When the Media scares our Politicians..

As military spouse of many years, I stopped watching CNN, MSNBC, CBS, and NBC when they floated an anti-U.S.Military story that was damaging to morale AND to our soldiers' safety WAY back during the first Gulf War. One network also edited an interview with a friend of ours (a soldier) to the extent that it changed the meaning of what he was saying - it was deliberate. I vowed never to watch them again, and I haven't. I stumbled upon Fox News, and became a loyal viewer due to their support of our men & women in uniform. When our elected officials begin to fear the media - it fills me with suspicion and distrust. Clearly, Rockefeller fears transparency, and we must now ask WHY? What is it he can only accomplish in secrecy without public awareness? Scary.

Recall Rockefeller

I always thought West Virginia was unfairly tarnished as a backwards state, but Sen. Rockefeller's comments today cause me to reconsider that position and wonder, if in fact, their public school system is so deficient that Senator is either unable to read or unable to comprehend the meaning and intent of the Constitution of the United States. Because ignorance aside, the only other reason that could possibly motivate him to advocate actual government censorship of FOX NEWS and MSNBC (and folks, this is real First-Amendment-violating-government-censorship, as opposed to the challenge of surviving in the marketplace of ideas presented by consumer boycotts that is often alleged by some - incorrectly - to be censorship) is that the Senator is criminally negligent in executing his oath of office where he swore "to protect and defend the Constitution against all enemies, foreign and domestic" - and that oath of office applies to the whole Constitution, not just the parts you might agree with. Of course, if it isn't negligence, then he is advocating an overt criminal act to violate the fundamental civil rights of American citizens. Regardless of the reason, Sen. Rockefeller, by his actions today, has demonstrated that he is patently unfit to serve in his current office and should be recalled by the citizens of West Virginia.

News should be news, not opinion or emotion. America is dummer because of Fox and MSNBC. Freedom does not come from not knowing the facts - Fox/MSNBC distort facts to prove their narrative - dumb idiots in America then repeat it as fact. If a station says it's fair and balanced, then it should be held to that statement. Fox would never be able to win a case in court on their fair and balanced statement - they would be proven otherwise. A class-action suit should be brought against them to prove their promotions. At least MSNBC promotes itself legally and truthfully saying they are about pushing liberal ideas forward.

Clear evidence that great genes get diluted as the family lines continue to breed.

Is this not left-wing totalitarianism? What is he thinking?

Gets in the way of political discourse? Other view points than his own, ARE political discourse. That of course, is his problem. The left does not like other viewpoints. Rockefeller's favorite president cannot stand criticism, and would like to silence any dissent. So as a member of the liberal elite he slips and lets us know who he really is.

This is dangerous rhetoric, especially from a US Senator.

We need to on guard in the coming months, as opposition to the far left becomes more concrete given the election changes in their monopoly over their disastrous domestic and foreign policies.

His Fox diatribe is all about the American people rejecting his party. He's like the little kid whose mom takes away a toy so he sits in the corner and wails.

FOX News and MSNBC are not going to bring down the country. When government becomes involved in controlling messages the public receives, it is time for revolution.

What?

Let's assume, for the sake of argument, that the fine Senator's plan is constitutional (it isn't). This plan makes the assumption that all remaining networks, broadcast or cable, are objective. CNN has shilled for the left for decades. They like to pretend they are objective over there, but it just isn't true. The broadcast networks? All of them were in the tank for Obama in 2008 and all of them were vociferously anti-Bush and anti-Republican before that. None of these networks gives the slightest respect to conservatives or their causes. They may, from time to time, throw them a bone, but conservatives are generally treated with contempt and apprehension by the liberals that dominate ABC, NBC and CBS. Mr. Rockefeller knows that, by eliminating FOX and MSNBC, he has effectively slanted everything back to the left, right where it was before FOX arrived.

Fairness Doctrine?

Some poster suggested the reinstitution of the Fairness Doctrine. It is scary that anyone would even suggest that as a solution. The Fairness Doctrined did not promote "fairness" as its name implies. It effectively stifles debate and opinions, because it is not profitable for media outlets to try to even out all political messages which come from their microphones and cameras. Just think for a moment how a network has to apply such a law. It must track everything that is said on its airwaves and try to make sure a counterpoint is provided. It must always have an opposing guest whenever any guest utters an unexpected political opinion. Plus, this law effectively gives the right of interpretation to the federal government, who would decide whether something is "fair" or not. This, of course, would depend on which political party controlled D.C. at the time. Also, network news shows were never subject to this law, so Katie Couric and her ilk would be free to present the news in biased fashion just like thay always do.

Rockefeller should know, but clearly doesn't, that both Fox News and MSNBC (and also CNN and CNBC) are CABLE NEWS outlets who do not use "the airwaves".

They do not "broadcast" on the airwaves. They cablecast, which means these outlets are not subject to FCC oversight or control in any way, shape or form.

There are two methods of curing the mischiefs of faction: the one, by removing its causes; the other, by controlling its effects.

There are again two methods of removing the causes of faction: the one, by destroying the liberty which is essential to its existence; the other, by giving to every citizen the same opinions, the same passions, and the same interests.

It could never be more truly said than of the first remedy, that it was worse than the disease. Liberty is to faction what air is to fire, an aliment without which it instantly expires. But it could not be less folly to abolish liberty, which is essential to political life, because it nourishes faction, than it would be to wish the annihilation of air, which is essential to animal life, because it imparts to fire its destructive agency.Federalist 10

Who's a FASCIST ?!?!?

If you ever wondered which side of the fence you sit on, this is a great test!
If a Republican doesn't like guns, he doesn’t buy one.
If a Democrat doesn't like guns, he wants all guns outlawed.

If a Republican is a vegetarian, he doesn’t eat meat.
If a Democrat is a vegetarian, he wants all meat products banned for everyone.

If a Republican is homosexual, he quietly leads his life.
If a Democrat is homosexual, he demands legislated respect.

If a Republican is down-and-out, he thinks about how to better his situation.
A Democrat wonders who is going to take care of him.

If a Republican doesn't like a talk show host, he switches channels.
Democrats demand that those they don't like be shut down.

If a Republican is a non-believer, he doesn't go to church.
A Democrat non-believer wants any mention of God and religion silenced.

If a Republican decides he needs health care, he goes about shopping for it, or may choose a job that provides it..
A Democrat demands that the rest of us pay for his.

If a Republican reads this, he'll forward it so his friends can have a good laugh.
A Democrat will delete it because he's "offended".

Instead of always calling the right fascists, perhaps the left might look up the word and the history of fascism; or they could just bring it all back like they seem to want to.

The fact that a federal lawmaker, who swore an empty oath to uphold the Constitution, would be okay with unelected federal agencies silencing speech he disapproves of, only shows how far the rot has gone among these careerist parasites like this Rockefeller clown.

Senator Rockefeller

Senator John Davison Rockefeller IV says: “There’s a little bug inside of me which wants to get the F.C.C. to say to Fox and MSNBC ‘Out. Off. End. Goodbye.’ . . .”

His wife, Sharon, is the C.E.O. of WETA-TV, the PBS station in Washington, D.C., which competes with cable television.

Senator Rockefeller, that’s not a bug inside of you, it is a THUG inside of you, and it is a part of your natural genetic make-up. You are the great-grandson of John D. Rockefeller, the ruthless, cut-throat founder of the Standard Oil Company. From him you inherited, not only your money, but also a strong hostility toward pesky competition and your thuggish approach toward those who cross you.

Anyone who reads The History of The Standard Oil Company by Ida Tarbell can see how the morally degenerate (enemy of the First Amendment) grand-son derived from the morally degenerate founder.

Anyone who believes that either FOX noew or MSNBC should be taken off the air by the government doesn't belong in public office. You can't ge more un-American than to suggest that The First Amendment doesn't apply to anyone, regardless of your agreement or diagreement with their views. Disappointment in lack of leadership

What concerns me is the absence of any input from the other members concerning these statements. I'm not surprised that the other members sat in silence and I believe this is fallout due to how well the republican candidates did in the last election.

The First Amendment (Amendment I) to the United States Constitution is part of the Bill of Rights. The amendment prohibits the making of any law "respecting an establishment of religion, impeding the free exercise of religion, infringing on the freedom of speech, infringing on the freedom of the press, interfering with the right to peaceably assemble or prohibiting the petitioning for a governmental redress of grievances......

Part of the oath of office for these Senators is that thy promise to defend the constitution, yet they have publicly called for a repeal of the first amendment when it comes to the freedom of speech when it comes to addressing the grievances against government policy. All that is being asked is that the electorate hold their representatives personally accountable for the activities they support while in office. I'm sure they find this inconvenient.

I personally would like to this as an example of how well they stick to their word, since Rockefeller openly suggest they be denied their first amendment right. Since the other members of the bench sat in silence, they too violated their oath to defend the constitution and are not fit to hold office. Shame on them all and the morons that keep electing them into office.

What Rockefeller actually said

Apparently, no one actually watched the video including the media who are reporting on it. The comments about ending Fox and MSNBC were clearly not made in earnest but in a tone of kind of melancholy wishful thinking. Senator Rockefeller's excoriation of the media was never out of line. The most disturbing part was where he said that if the FCC could not get control of the content of cable TV, the government would do it for them. Unfortunately, the tone and content of comments on this website suggest that Senator Rockefeller's assessment of the "dumbing down" of America was exactly right.

Did Anyone bother to go to the original article in NYTimes?

It saddens me to realize so many people make knee-jerk responses to one author\'s opinion, instead of finding out what the Senator\'s comments were actually about and how they could actually affect any of us.
Many people picked out only pieces of the author\'s opinions to glum onto. Go back and read the last couple paragraphs where he agrees with the Senator\'s scripted statement.
I don\'t have any connection to Rockefeller and don\'t know his stand on issues but when I read this article, as well as the original, I see that what he said is being spun out of control. I do know a little bit about how congressional proceedings work.
In Congressional hearings, legislators on the committee (as well as witnesses) may make scripted statements that are then included into the official proceedings records. These are usually written by staff and the legislator to convey the official\'s position on the subject being reviewed. In addition, during the proceedings, probably before or after the official statement is read into the records, the person, in this case Rockefeller, might make additional comments, usually something more personal or spontaneous. In this case, Rockefeller shared his frustration with the TV stations on the extremes of the political spectrum, which he felt preyed on the \"entertainment\" value of making statements, instead of actually making sure all the statements are actually facts that can hold up to critical evaluation. Critical evaluation is the only thing that separates fact from opinion. He was stating his personal opinion.
It would be like the difference between wishing you could live at Disneyland and actually buying Disneyland so you could live there. One is a wishful thought, the other can be substantiated or refuted by further evidence.
So, in the author\'s rush to show his disapproval of Rockefeller\'s words, which were only a wishful opinion, the article implies that Rockefeller intends to force the FCC to do something. Rockefeller is NOT implying he is intending to do anything, just stating an opinion. None of us is going to lose either station or have any first amendment rights stripped. He was actually exercising his own right to express his opinion. Somehow it seems none of you believe anyone who disagrees with you should be allowed an opinion. How ironic! Please check out the original article. go to the NY Times website and enter \"Rockefeller\".
Then head to your local library, bookstore to borrow or buy a book on critcal thinking skills, or enroll in your nearest community college or university and take a course in a critical thinking skills(also called Logic) course so that you too can learn how to tell the difference between someone\'s opinion and facts that can be substantiated. It will help you to think for yourself in a world filled with lots of opinions touted as facts. Good luck!

West Virgina Senator Jay Rockefeller

Senator Jay Rockefeller heads a Senate Committee/Sub-Committee, that must approve all New Automotive Engine Technology. When David Rockefeller passes on, Jay Rockefeller is the person most likely to take David Rockefeller\'s place as Head of the John D. Rockefeller Family Fortune Manager. David Controls the J.P. Morgan Chase Bank, and Exxon Mobile. Suppose there was a New Technology that enabled an Automotive Engines to have No Octane Requirements for gasoline, and No Cetane Requirements for Diesel Fuels. Just a couple of years ago, Exxon had the Biggest Profits of any Corporation in the History of the Entire World! Exxon\'s profits are due to a Sweet Heart Deal the Big Four Anglo-American International Oil Corporations have with Saudi-Arabia. Then there is Jay Rockefeller in the perfect position to Block all New Automotive Engine Technology, such as The Mann Diesel Controlled Combustion Cycle, which enables Diesel Engines to run on Kerosene, which can be produced at Twice the Rate of Gallons of Motor Fuel per Barrels of Crude Oil, as can Diesel Fuel be produced from Crude Oil!
There is a similar Controlled Combustion Cycle, The Texaco Controlled Combustion Cycle which has No Octane Requirements, and can use motor fuels which can be produced at Twice the Rate of High Octane Gasoline, per Barrel of Crude Oil. If the U.S. Government were to mandate that all new Automotive Engines used one of the Two Controlled Combustion Cycle Engines, either the Mann Diesel, or the Texaco Gasoline, the Imports of Crude Oil for Automotive Engine Fuel would drop by One Twentith or more the First complete year of operation, and the same amount for about Twenty Years. The U.S. and the World would No longer need Crude Oil from the Mid-East, such as Saudi Arabia, Iran, Iraq, or Kuwait and the other Persian Gulf Emirates. Crude Oil Prices would steadily drop. These Controlled Combustion Cycles are not New, President Richard Nixon was going to mandate that all new U.S.Automotive Engines use them: the Cycles were perfected during the First Nixon administration, by University and Independent
Research Laboratories. But Big Western Oil opposed these Cycles, as they would drive down the price of Crude Oil to the production costs of Saudi Arabia, according to an Article in Barron\'s Magazine in 1976. These were also reviewed in Popular Science in 1976! The Western Oil Industry plus Soviet Russia, and Mexico. all dependent on High Oil Prices, joined together to force President Richard Nixon to resign, by the means of Character Assassination. The Crypto-Communist New York Times did the main job on President Richard Nixon to protect the Communist Soviet Union. Communism is a Jewish Heresy according to Professor Orthodox Rabbi Jacob Neusner. People that say they are Ethnic Jews only, are likely Marxists, if not Marxist Leninist s! A Communist rejects Moses rules in Deuteronomy 6:4-5: \"The Lord your God, is One God! You shall Love the Lord your God, with all your Heart, with all your Soul, and with all your Strength (Might.)\" This is the basis of Judaism and Christianity. The New York Times protected Imperial Germany: when its European Correspondant learned from and Interview with the King of Prussia, Kaiser Whilhelm, that Imperial Germany was planig a War of World Conquest, It listened to the Prussian Ambassador, and did not Publish the interview in which Kaiser Whilhelm revealed Imperial Germanies Plans to Conquer the Entire World! The NYTimes did not inform even the U.S. Government! As many people know the Communist Party of the U.S.A. shut down its \"Daily Work Newspaper,\" changing its name to People\'s Weekly, an ideological training ground for Young Communists. As for the Communist point of View, the New York Times is Far Superior Representative of the Communist Viewpoint, compared to the Old, \"The Daily Worker.\" Three Organizations, if they had joined together could have led protests and succeeded in blocking Adolf Hitler from coming to power: these are The New York Times, the ACLU, The Anti-Defamation League! People should blame the Holocaust on the NYTimes, and act accordingly! The Forcing President Richard Nixon form Office, caused a population loss of One Hundred and Fifty Million U.S. Civizens, as a result of the Oil Industry Economically forcing Abortions from 1973 to the present, November, 2010!

The Left needs ignorance (and fear) to grow its power. Without the light of truth shined on their propaganda, they can and will subjugate the people. This is their goal.

It is the Left who strives perpetually for censorship ("Fairness Doctrine") and less information out there rather than more. They know their failed policies would be marginalized or dismissed by a learned, enlightened public.

On one point the Senator is correct...

I have to agree fully with the Senators statement that, "We have journalism that is always ravenous for the next rumor, but insufficiently hungry for the facts that can nourish our democracy."

However, one must also self-examine one's own priorities, and decide whether knowing who is winning on "Celebrity Dance" or the other horrid reality porn out there today is a positive addition to one's life.

Consciously expanding one's attention span, and developing a thirst for useful knowledge would likely be a more satisfying, beneficial habit.

However, Rockefeller's suggestion that government censorship of the media would be desirable should bring such condemnation that he have no other option than to resign. Still, I won't be holding my breath...

...does he "suggest government censorship"? I don't see it anywhere, and these clearly partisan reactions to an entirely rational (and, IMO, true) statement about the state of the media are evidence of the very damage (done by Fox, MSNBC, et al.) that Rockefeller is wisely and courageously citing.

Rockefeller

His phone lines are "experiencing an unusually heavy volume" ... do tell, wonder why. His voicemail is completely full. Maybe he just wanted some people to call his office to make himself feel relevant.... Nah, he's just an idiotic demoncrat.

Quieting the Opposition

Understand that Rockerfeller has no desire to shut down MSNBC. He would, however, love to shut-up the only "opposition" voice in the media. But he knows that to propose cancelling only FOX would look like the partisan move that it is. So, to shift attention he osses in MSNBC, knowing full well that their are plenty of left-wing news outlets remaining to carry his water.

witless but balanced

I can't be the only one to notice that Rockefeller made this pronouncement on the same day the House Republicans tried to defund NPR over its alleged political sins. One witless, misdirected and futile politcal gesture deserves another.

Sen. Jay Rockefeller

When Jay Rockefeller first became a Democrat senator from WV, you knew that he was simply an opportunist. Why a Democrat given his family background? The liberal politicians have had a free ride from the lion's share of the press for years. Finally, Fox with all its flaws has challenged their agenda - thankfully. All the commercial news media (whether print, TV over the airwaves, the Internet or cable) IS "selling" news. This is an unfortunate result of a capitalist society, but it is FAR preferable to its alternatives either from the left or the right. The Obama administration has set the tone for intolerance of the press when its views differ from the party line. This is indeed a serious threat to our free society. Jay Rockefeller is just paroting the party line, which is a sad commentary on his intellect and his grasp of the country's mood since Obama took office. I would not, however, describe his comments as facist - they are socialist through & through just like the philosopy of our hopeless president. WV should retire this guy to his life of inherited priviledge at the next opportunity.

Senator Rockefeller - Civility of Discourse

Given the choice between watching the shrill and often time phony exchanges between our elected officials on CSPAN and the intelligent discourse between opposing views on FOX News, I will take FOX News anyday! What Rockefeller doesn't want is for people to be reminded of how out of touch he and others in his party are out of touch with Americans-at-large.

I'll keep FOX; Not too sure about PMSNBC

Let's just cut to the chase, and "elminate" Sen. Rockefeller? I can live without this pompous fool. While we're at it, we can get rid of Georgie Soros too.

Rockefeller's Musings

I find it disheartening to read the vituperation in the comments to this article. The man muses bringing news back to the news, civility back to the political discourse, educated discussion back to the political arenas. Muses mind you. Not suggests, not calls for, not demands or proposes. That these comments were not in his prepared remarks suggests they were off the cuff speculations about "what might be better", not a demand for censorship. I'm not in favour of censorship and I doubt Rockefeller is either. But the "chumming" response to his comments suggests that the damage done by the extremist voices on both sides of the spectrum is corrosive and destructive.

Rockefellar

I suggest getting this moron out of the Senate. If the "media" did there job, there would be no need for Fox News.

why should it surprise any off us that any of these pols would not want anyone around that reports on what they're up to unless it's some meaningless grandstanding or pork they're bringing home?

Typical NAZI Leftist

This guy is a Nazi goon..... He is evidence enough that it's necessary for the citizenry to be well armed and prepared to fight these Jack boot thugs when they try to silence dissenting views. And this from a congressman? Silence Fox News and be prepared for armed conflict you brown shirt NAZI!

RockeFuller

I love trust fund babies born with silver spoons who descend from robber barons who go into politics with literally no real life experience like 99% of the country. This "Rockefuller" should get a real job and leave the media world alone!
