The deadline for the 2022 Rias Media Prizes, which honors journalists with $12,000 in prize money for excellence in reporting on transatlantic issues, is next week (Jan. 31).

The RIAS Media Prize is intended to help strengthen the diversity of transatlantic dialogue and to deepen interest in German-American relations.

The 2022 prizes will award total of up to $12,000 (10,000 EUR) in prize money for exceptional radio, television and digital stories, including a new grand prize for the single-most outstanding entry broadcast in either the United States or Germany in 2021.

Germany and the USA are each facing new directions in many respects, both internally and externally. Committed, independent journalism can contribute a great deal to mutual understanding of and between countries as well as to an open social discourse about values and goals. The contributions submitted should go beyond daily and routine reporting, should process information and describe social reality in a remarkable way, and promote dialogue on similarities and differences in transatlantic relations.

Created in 1995 by the German-American Commission that is dedicated to promoting broadcast journalism exchanges in both countries and keeping alive the spirit of the legendary Cold War-era “Radio in American Sector,” the RIAS Media Award has become a coveted prize for journalists in both the United States and Germany.

The Radio Television Digital News Foundation has co-sponsored and administered German-American exchange programs since 1993 to give journalists the opportunity to learn directly about Germany's culture, politics and practice of journalism.
