Celebrate Freedom of Speech Week 2016

October 17, 2016 01:30

Today is the first day of Free Speech Week 2016, when we celebrate freedom of speech and of the press.

Free Speech Week is a yearly event to raise public awareness of the importance of free speech in our democracy and to celebrate that freedom. Because freedom of speech is a right all American’s share, this non-partisan, non-ideological event is intended to be a unifying celebration. Individuals, schools, and all types of organizations are encouraged to recognize and celebrate Free Speech Week.

How can you participate?

As an individual or family:
  • Raise free speech awareness by telling your friends about Free Speech Week. Talk to your kids about freedom of speech and how it affects their lives.
  • Exercise your free speech rights by posting a message online. Express yourself in the ways that work best for you. Just let your voice be heard!
  • Get others involved by talking to the organizations you belong to. Tell them about Free Speech Week, and ask them to be partnering organizations.
As an organization:
Individuals and organizations plan and engage in a wide variety of activities to mark the week. For examples go to Activities in the Spotlight and Celebration Ideas.

RTDNA supports First Amendment freedoms across the country through our work with legislatures, courts, businesses and journalists. We host the First Amendment Awards each year to honor those who help forward freedom of speech and of the press as vital parts of a healthy democracy. We encourage you to exercise your rights this week and throughout the year.
