Excellence in Journalism 2017 kicked off Thursday in Anaheim, California. People lined up at the registration desk and crowded the expo floor on the first day of the three-day event, running through September 9.
One journalism student studying broadcast journalism at the University of Calfiornia Fullerton said she’s mostly looking forward to connecting with people.
“This is my last year, and so my goal is to connect with future employers and try to make a great first impression and get my resume checked out,” Estrella Monreal. “And just get in contact and network with people.
Another student studying public relations at the University of Texas said he’s looking forward to making more connections.
“I’m a PR major, and I just think coming here is going to be really eye-opening to me and just kind of see like a different side of the education that I haven’t really been looking at,” Triston Gresie said. “I’m excited for that.”
Gresie said he heard about the EIJ Conference through his best friend.
“We’re both a member of SPJ at Texas, so our staff member, Kym Fox, she told us about it,” Gresie said. “He decided to go through with it and I’m not going to let him do anything without me so.”
SPJ Award Winner Ao Gao graduated from Arizona State University. She said her main objective is to get a job.
“I think this is a great time to network,” Gao said. “I already graduated, but I’m a recent graduate. So, I’m still seeking for employment now. There are many recruiters out there. It’s a great time to network."
