Emmy Award-winning news veteran Mike Cavender served as Executive Director of the RTDNA/F from 2011 to 2017 after more than 20 years in virtually every board capacity, including Chairman, of this international electronic news professional association and its educational foundation. Cavender retired in December 2017.

Cavender has deep experience in broadcast and online news, having served as Vice President of News at several major and large market CBS affiliates, including Atlanta, Washington, DC, Tampa-St. Petersburg and Nashville.  Prior to his management career, he was an anchor, reporter and documentary producer at stations in Texas and Illinois.

His career also includes news consulting work abroad and serving as a start-up consultant to the Associated Press on several statewide video networks.  Early career work includes positions as a writer and producer at WMAQ-TV, the NBC-owned station in Chicago and as a news anchor and reporter for several Chicago-area radio stations.

Cavender holds a Master of Science degree in Journalism from the Medill School at Northwestern University, where he was graduated with honors. Continuing education studies include the broadcast management program at the Kellogg Graduate School of Business at Northwestern and programs at the Center for Creative Leadership.
