2024 Murrow Awards Size Question
As part of the 2024 Edward R. Murrow Awards process, RTDNA is collecting information about the newsrooms that enter. As part of that project, we are asking newsrooms to share information about their editorial staff size. Here are some Frequently Asked Questions about that process:
Which employees qualify as staff members?
Full-time staff members who spend more than 50% of their job producing or managing editorial content.
Do interns count as staff members?
Yes. If interns were on staff when the entry submission was produced, they should count toward your staff total.
How should I count part-time staff members?
Each part-time staff member and independent contractor should add 0.5 to your staff total, as long as they spend at least 50% of their time on assignments devoted to editorial projects.
How should I count staff if the entry piece is a partnership?
List the staff size of whichever newsroom is larger. Then add the number of staff members from partner organizations who helped on the project.
What if my staffing levels fluctuate throughout the year?
Determine how many staff members were employed when the entry submission was produced, and use that number.
What if employees split time between editorial and other departments?
If they spend more than 50% of their time producing or managing editorial content, they should be counted. If it is less than 50%, you don't need to count them.
Why is RTDNA asking this question?
RTDNA regularly collects information throughout the Murrow process to help us deliver the best awards process possible. This will help us achieve that goal.
