RTDNA announces new Murrow winner in Large Market TV Sports Reporting

The Radio Television Digital News Association has awarded a new winner for the National Edward R. Murrow Award for Sports Reporting in Large Market Television.
KABC-TV in Los Angeles is the new National Murrow Award winner for its story, “FACEism: The Lantern,” about a 3,000-pound Japanese lantern that sits atop Dodger Stadium and its connection to superstar Shohei Ohtani.
The decision was made to award the Murrow to KABC-TV after a judge reached out to RTDNA staff once national winners were announced on Aug. 13, indicating there had been a mistake. After investigating the issue, staff and the category judges concluded the error occurred when the title of the piece and the five-digit applicant ID code, which RTDNA uses to process awards, did not match. Staff and judges determined the appropriate course of action was to correct the error and award the Murrow to the appropriate newsroom.
RTDNA is in the process of retooling its judging process and judging platform to prevent errors like this one from occurring in the future. The goal is to share those improvements publicly by the end of the calendar year.
