What Leaders of Color Say Newsrooms Really Need

Leadership,

The creators of the “Sincerely, Leaders of Color” column are coming to RTDNA21 and hope to have an open and honest discussion about what really matters in the newsroom.

“We’re hoping that people of all kinds come to this session, whether they are in positions of power or hoping to be in positions of power or are people of color or are not people of color,” said P. Kim Bui, director of product and audience innovation at the Arizona Republic and one of the creators of the column. “I think that is the best way for a fruitful conversation to happen.”

Bui and column co-creator Emma Carew Grovum said they hope people bring questions they might be too afraid to ask otherwise to the session, “Sincerely, Leaders of Color: What We Really Need in the Newsroom.”

“I think it’s really important that anyone who comes to our session is ready to feel discomfort and then spend some time working through that discomfort on their own,” said Carew Grovum, a journalist and technologist and founder of Kimbap Media. “Hopefully they walk away with one idea of how to support and help their fellow colleagues.”

This breakout session will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 24 at RTDNA21 in Denver.
